BOAT DOCKS UPDATE
The Sutcliffe boat docks have been a torment for many
boat fisherman. With the intense lake elevations fluctuations with dry
and wet years, the boat dock location and accessibility are under study.
The Tribe has recently received grant money to find the best location/s
for boat docks. A bathymetric study is underway to investigate drop-offs,
depth, sediment, and structural integrity.
Zebra mussels, Dreissena polymorpha,
are small, fingernail-sized, freshwater mollusks accidentally introduced
to North America via ballast water from a transoceanic vessel. Since their
introduction in the mid 1980s, they have spread rapidly to all of the Great
Lakes and an increasing number of inland waterways in the United States
and Canada. Zebra mussels colonize on surfaces, such as docks, boat hulls,
commercial fishing nets, water intake pipes and valves, native mollusks
and other zebra mussels. Their only known predators, some diving ducks,
freshwater drum, carp, and sturgeon, are not numerous enough to have a significant
effect on them. Zebra mussels have impacted the Great Lakes ecosystem and
economy greatly.
ROVING CREEL
This month, the Pyramid Lake Fisheries will be conducting an intense
roving and fixed creel investigation, Teh investigation will provide fishery
personnel with the information for the best implementation on creel design.
For the past years, the Fisheries have had a fixed Creel Station to catch
the majority of boat and shore anglers who may live in California or within
the Greater Reno/Sparks area. Unfortunately, we often miss fisherman leaving
at other access points or fish at times when the Creel Station is not
open. These gray area of prime fishing could be useful in calculating
fishing pressure, catch per unit effort, and stocking activities.
The Creel Station will be open every weekend of this month from 11am
- 7pm. The roving creel will be from boat and shore on randomly selected
days throughout the month. Pyramid Lake Fisheries personnel may approach
you and may obtain data from your fishing activity during that particular
day. It would be helpful to our Creel Workers if you could mentally record
your fishing day. When you're having fun fishing, it's easy to be distracted
and lose your count so jot it down in a small notebook or piece of paper.

Zebra mussels are just one of the many of the
Aquatic Nuisance Species that could possibly invade the Truckee River watershed
and Pyramid Lake. We'd like to take some proactive measurements to keep
these aquatic hitchhikers out of our waters.
Here's a list of some other aquatic nuisance species
to look out for:
New Zealand mudsnail
Mitten Crab
Eurasian Watermilfoil
Please inspect and
thoroughly clean your boat before moving from one body of water to another
