Once completely underwater these formations were created by calcium carbonate deposits rising through the lake bottom mud fused together by heat through the action of supersaturated hot springs thousands of years ago. This area is closed due to vandalizm and it's sacred land status by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe.
